Choosing a software development partner is one of the most important decisions you will make for a digital project. The right partner accelerates your business; the wrong one can cost months and budgets. These are the questions we encourage every client to ask, including when they are evaluating us.
1. Who will own the source code and designs?
You should own everything created for your project: code, designs, documentation and accounts. Make sure this is written into the contract, and that repositories and app store accounts are set up under your organization.
2. How do you understand the problem before building?
A good partner asks many questions before proposing a solution. Look for a structured discovery phase that covers your users, goals, constraints and success metrics.
3. How will we communicate, and how often?
Ask about regular demos, progress reports, shared task boards and a single point of contact. Weekly visibility of working software is a strong sign of a healthy process.
4. How do you estimate cost and handle change?
Requirements evolve. Understand whether the engagement is fixed-scope or time-and-materials, and how changes are priced and approved. Transparent estimates protect both sides.
5. How do you ensure quality?
Ask about code reviews, automated tests, testing on real devices and how bugs are tracked. Quality practices should be part of every sprint, not a phase at the end.
6. How do you handle security and privacy?
Your partner should follow secure coding practices, protect credentials, encrypt data in transit and understand data protection laws that apply to your users. For mobile apps, ask how they handle store privacy disclosures and account deletion requirements.
7. Can we see relevant work or talk to references?
Case studies, published apps and conversations with past clients tell you far more than a sales presentation. Ask about projects similar to yours in scope or industry.
8. Who exactly will work on our project?
Know the team: their roles, experience and how much of their time is dedicated to you. Ask what happens if a team member leaves during the project.
9. What happens after launch?
Software needs ongoing care. Ask about warranty periods, maintenance plans, response times for critical issues and how updates for new operating system versions are handled.
10. What if we want to move on?
A trustworthy partner makes it easy to leave. Ask about handover documentation, knowledge transfer and access to all accounts and repositories at any time.
Making the decision
Price matters, but it is rarely the best predictor of success. Choose the partner who understands your goals, communicates clearly and demonstrates a disciplined approach to quality. If you would like to put these questions to us, we are happy to answer every one.
